This is a blog about words and where they come from.
I take great pleasure in investigating how language works and how languages work. My approach is mainly historical and comparative: Has that word been in German for a long time? How is it expressed in English? How is the root connected to other words in other languages?
Dies ist ein Blog über Worte und ihre Wurzeln. Sind sie tief verwurzelt oder rübergewachsen, in welchen Sprachen haben sie Verwandtschaft und wie haben sie über die Zeit ihre Erscheinung verändert?
My interest in words, patterns and their connections in time and space led me to study linguistics. I’m always curious to see what’s behind the tools on our tongues. I also like to talk about titbits I’ve discovered. And to write about it: This is the third blog on language that I start, this time partly in English (imagery and name are explained here: trees & roots).
Mein Interesse an Wörtern und den grösseren Zusammenhängen in der Sprache hat mich zum Linguistikstudium gebracht. Ich stolpere ständig über neue Worte, die mich zu Nachforschungen antreiben. Beobachtungen und Resultate meiner Recherchen werden in diesem Blog kungetan. Radices ist die dritte Sprachblog-Inkarnation, welche die erste (The heimlich maneuver is schadenfriendly, 2008-2012) und die zweite (Vokalspalter, 2013-2015) inkorporiert (zur Symbolik und Namensgebung lese man: Bäume & Wurzeln).

Thanks! The thing about learning „Swiss German“ is, there are several varieties, but as far as I know, there are grammars for e.g. Berndeutsch or Züritüütsch. Also https://vochabular.ch comes to my mind, but it’s not really my area of expertise, so you might have found that already…
